There’s nothing better than being out on a trail, surrounded by towering peaks, breathing in that crisp mountain air. In January 2024, I moved to Canada, and now I’m lucky enough to have some of the most stunning national parks right on my doorstep.

But to be honest? Even before that, every vacation I took led me straight to the mountains, because that’s the one place where my mind truly feels free.

I started this blog to share my passion for the outdoors and all my learnings with you. I want to show you that hiking and nature is fun, share my best trail tips, help you feel confident exploring the wild (yes, even in bear country!), and inspire you to experience the beauty of this world beyond tourist hotspots and highways.

One of the most underrated nature phenomena of the Canadian Rockies in spring✨

As lake ice begins to thaw, it separates into thousands of individual crystal columns. And when they drift apart and clink against each other it sounds like someone filled a pool with crystals. 😍
It only lasts for a couple of days in spring, and once it’s gone, you have to wait a whole year.

One of the coolest spring experiences in the Rockies 😍

Candle ice forms under certain conditions each year in spring, when the lakes are thawing. It’s a rare phenomenon, as it only lasts for a couple of days.
If you miss it, you gonna have to wait for another year.

Basically it’s ice that forms as vertical ice columns during the melting process. Those columns make incredible tinkling sounds when they move against each other, which sounds like a pool of crystals. 💎

I knew it would be a cool thing to see, but actually touching and listening to it is an incredibly satisfying experience. ☺️

I knew it would be special, but this special? 😍✨

I had never seen candle ice before, because Iwas never around or came too late and it was already gone. on this day, we went out, hoping to find some candle ice, but not quite sure if it was still there, because it only lasts for a short window in spring. ⏳👀

When we arrived at the lake, we could hear it before we saw it: a quiet tinkle coming from the lake. 🎶
What followed was one of the most unexpectedly magical afternoons I’ve had in the Rockies. We got our paddleboards out and onto the water, and the first time I touched the ice with my paddle: 🤯🤯🤯
picking up columns that felt like glass, watching them drift apart on the water, and then seeing the underwater shots for the first time was just incredible and SO satisfying.🧊

⚠️If you ever come across candle ice, please remember: It may look solid, but is NOT. It can collapse without warning and offers nothing to hold onto if you go through.

🛶 If you go by paddleboard, canoe or other kind of watercraft: wear a life jacket. the water is colder than you think and can be fatal if you fall in 🙏🏻
🤓 and: always check the launching rules for your lake before you go, because not every lake allows private watercrafts

the magic only exists for a couple of days each year ✨ and only when the conditions are right 👀

Candle ice forms when sunlight penetrates the surface and breaks the ice down into long vertical crystals that cling together like a chandelier about to fall apart. The surface often looks stable, but it’s not (that’s why it’s also called ‘rotten ice’) Many people and animals have learned that the hard way. 🥺

you really have to get close to experience it, and even though we see a lot of footage from Canada every year, it’s not unique to Canada. But Alberta gets the right conditions more than other places. ☺️

Sitting at the shoreline and just listening to the sound is already worth it. But diving underneath was even better. 🥰

This comment made me think. 💭

And when I thought about it, it made me so angry, because of the audacity to think we’re better, or have a right to control other species.

And tbh, for a species that thinks it has the smartest brain on the planet, we’ve built some genuinely baffling systems. 😅

We’ve built ourselves a world where we’ve forgotten the simplest things. Like, how to just be, how to sit with a feeling instead of immediately trying to fix it, how to actually listen to our bodies, or how to exist in a moment instead of already planning the next one. But yet, some of us believe, we have the right to control other species? 🤔

And I know this might be a bit provocative, but I’m not pointing fingers, I catch myself in many of those slides in this post, too. 🙋‍♀️

I’m sharing this for awareness reasons and from a genuine place of curiosity, because I think it’s worth asking: why do we think we’re the ones with it all figured out?

It’s not just the sheer beauty that leaves you speechless in every season, it’s the variety of landscapes, the vibe, the wildlife, the rugged mountains, the hidden stories, and the people. Almost everyone you meet out here has a smile on their face, and I just love spending time here.
If you ever get the chance to visit Kananaskis, skip Banff and come here instead 🤫

one last dance with winter (hopefully) 💃🏼

[hosted] to be honest, I pictured this stay at @sundancebybasecamp as a little spring getaway, not knowing winter wanted to show off one last time. 😅

But I also couldn’t have imagined a better weekend to say a final goodbye to it. Aaaand just for the record: I’ll just ignore any possible May blizzards and choose to believe it’s snowing wildflowers instead. 🌼

Staying in one of the Sundance tents is one of my favourite ways to experience Kananaskis. The setup is this really unique mix of comfort but also being surrounded by nature. 🌲 you can hear the wind moving through the trees, the sound of birds, and sometimes nothing at all. ✨

The site itself is hidden in trees on the side of highway 40 in Kananaskis, so you’re close to everything without being in the middle of anything. From here, you can explore Kananaskis Village, but it’s also just a quick drive to some of my favourite trailheads in the area. 😍

For me, the people always make a big difference. I had a really lovely chat with the manager Abby (shout out to you if you see this 💛), and for me, friendly staff and real human presence always make me feel welcome. 🥰

And now the only thing u can say: I am SO excited for the trails to finally shed their snow layer and the mountains open up again for higher climbs 🥾

Somewhere between winter & spring, but mostly winter 😅❄️

April has been fooling us from day one. We had so many false springs it almost drove me nuts 😂

But that didn’t stop us from adventuring, hiking, traveling, spending time in the mountains, skiing, meeting friends, befriending a goose and being outside as much as possible. 🥾🏔️
We even saw our first Grizzly of the year ☺️🐻

One of my highlights was spending quality time with Hanno’s brother, who came to visit from Germany 🥰
It’s always so special when friends and family from back home come here, and we get to show them around.

However, I’m done with winter now, so please May: bring on spring 😍🌸

With wildflower season around the corner, I’ve been thinking about something I learned after a hike a few years ago 🌼

I used to think picking one wildflower didn’t really matter, and maybe one actually doesn’t.
But hiking trails and view points are explored by hundreds, sometimes thousands of people throughout the season. Soo, imagine what happens if everone picks 1-2 wildflowers. 👀
When wildflowers are picked before they can be pollinated, they can’t produce seeds, which means fewer plants return the next year (and so on).

Over time, that can change alpine ecosystems and meadow landscapes, especially in places like the Canadian Rockies where summers are short.

Learning about local plants and ecosystems helped me so much to understand the environment a bit more (and I’m still learning, because there are SOO MANY different species). 🤓

And there are so many ways to enjoy wildflowers without picking them 🌸

Don’t feel bad if you picked a few flowers in the past, we probably all have. But least we can do is keep learning. I’m learning to be a bit more aware about the impact my actions can have out there. And maybe sharing this helps you too. ☺️

Every time I look at the three sisters in Canmore, it feels like I’ve accidentally opened a screensaver in real life, and I get that feeling a lot in the Canadian Rockies.
Every corner looks too perfect to be real, and must’ve been someone’s desktop background at some point. 👀

Anyway… I sometimes wish my laptop could actually take me to the places it shows me.

Winter, are you finally done yet? 🥹

I keep seeing little spring moments from BC, from back home in Germany, from everywhere 😭 people sitting in the sun in t-shirts, trees and grass turning green…
But meanwhile in Alberta: -10C and snow still coming down 😂 (😭)

We planned a cute little spring getaway at @sundancebybasecamp and once again ended up back in winter.

It was still SO cozy on our campsite though 🥰 waking up surrounded by trees and mountains is always such a treat, no matter what season or weather 🏔️
(But I have to admit I was veeeeery grateful for the heaters in those tents 😂)

One thing I loved about opening our door in the morning after it snowed all night: seeing all the little footprints from wildlife that passed by while we were sleeping 🐰😍

But seriously… winter, you can go now. 🙏🏻

tbh, I was never a big fan of Canada geese. 🥲
Their honking annoyed me, their sh*t is everywhere, and during nesting season they TERRIFY me (how are you supposed to run past them during nesting season without getting attacked or side eyed?! 😅).

But then one of them chose the balcony below us as her nesting spot (third year in a row now, and maybe I felt a bit flattered). 🥹

I became friends with her. It may be a one sided friendship, but at least, she tolerates me (I think).

I didn’t really bond with the male, because whenever he shows up, he’s busy attacking his own reflection in the windows 😵‍💫 so even if geese are supposed to be smart, I’m not sure he’s the brightest light in the barn.

Anyway, I got curious and went down a rabbit hole of goose facts: behavior, nesting, hatching, honking, and so much more, and I have to admit: Canada geese are actually pretty incredible. 😎

They’re smart, loyal, adaptable, funny in their own weird way, and incredibly resilient. and for me, this was just another reminder to stay curious and keep an open mind about the other species we share this planet with. 🥰🌎

Do your shoes make weird sounds too? 👀

I think hiking boots and trail runners just bring a vibe. ✨ When you’re about to put them on, there is that feeling of excitement. Invisible, but it’s there. Once your feet touch the boots, you just know: you gonna have a goooood time. 🥳

A few facts about their history 🤓👇
Before the 1800s, most shoes were made straight, which means: there was no left or right. 🤯 People literally just wore them until they molded to their feet (can you imagine the blisters?! 😭)

Even though there’s no single ‘first’ hiking boot, there were a few things happening around boots in the late 1800s into the early 1900s, especially around Germany and Austria. As hiking and mountaineering got more popular in places like the Alps, people needed better footwear 🥾

Around that time, Sebastian Kneipp, was trying to promote walking in nature for health). Bootmakers in the region started making sturdier, more supportive boots specifically for rough terrain 🏔️

The hiking boots we know today are influenced by military designs. Soldiers needed tough, supportive boots, and a lot of those features carried over into outdoor gear (which makes sense, my boots help me fight elevation and weather too 🥲)

Sooo, I’m challenging you to take your shoes outside and actually listen to them (listen closely, they might be shy). 👀👂🏻

Happy Earth day 2026 | today & every day ✨🌎

Earth Day is our yearly reminder of how important it is to protect our planet and raise awareness about the challenges it’s facing. It’s easy to focus on everything that’s going wrong, but Earth Day also celebrates the progress we’ve made, and reminds us that every day, and every small action, counts. 💛

We live on such a beautiful planet, full of tiny and big wonders, and it doesn’t deserve to be treated the way we often treat our fast paced, consumption driven world. Because she’s the one that provides us with air, water, food, and a place to live. 🌎

This year’s theme, ‘our power, our planet’, focuses on the changes that come from all the little everyday actions of people, communities, and families who care about where they live.

So, the best thing we can do is stay informed, stay aware, and do our part in the ways we can. ☺️

The answer is BIRDS!! Who agrees? 🙋🏼‍♀️

I’m slowly but surely becoming a birder 😅
because if this little Whiskey Jack can boost my mental health in seconds, he better start doing his magic 🐦✨

A study from King’s College London (2022) found that seeing or hearing birds is linked to improved mental wellbeing (and the effect can last up to 8 hours). And apparently listening to birdsongs can reduce anxiety and stress levels too. ☺️🎵

Maybe we should all start birding a little more? 👀

As someone who spend the majority of her life suffering through grey and rainy winters, I looove canadian winters, and how a fresh dump of snow makes the landscape looking like it’s been dusted with icing sugar ❄️

But it’s the END OF APRIL (!) 😭 and I am craving shorts, warm sun on my skin, longer breaks on my hikes, wildflowers and I just wanna throw my spikes into the corner NOW.

The only thing keeping me sane 🤓 👇
all this late snow can help wildflowers, because it melts slowly, soaking the ground and giving plants a good water supply into spring, which gives me hope for an insane wildflower season 🌸

This is exactly what living in Alberta in April feels like 😅

And apparently not only we get tricked by the false spring(s), even the geese fly thousands of kilometers just to end up back in winter 👀

This goose here chose a nesting spot high above ground and sat through a blizzard for nearly 20 hours straight. The snow was building up and nearly covered her body completely.

Geese are very protective of their eggs (obviously, it’s their babies 🥹) and in extreme conditions like this, they won’t leave their eggs, until it’s safe to go and grab some food again. They can go without food for up to 2 days. Her body heat will go downwards and she switches to kind of energy saving mode, still being high alert of possible threats (like me, peaking out of the window to watch her 😅).

Her patience is impressive.
Go Mama Goose ✨🥰

Yoho National Park in April is exactly what the name says: sheer awe. 🤯

Right at the edge of British Columbia, on the border of Alberta you’ll find this park sitting on the continental divide. The name ‘Yoho’ comes from the Cree word for awe, which is exactly what you feel no matter where you look. ☺️

I’ve been here quite a few times already, and I often get the question: doesn’t it get boring if youve been here so many times already? and my honest answer is: Absolutely not! 😍

A few facts about this place👇🤓
💡 Yoho sits on the continental divide, where water flows west to the Pacific ocean and east toward the Atlantic ocean

💡the rocks of the mountains are over 500 million years old

💡it’s home to the Burgess Shale, where scientists discovered bizarre early creatures like Anomalocaris (a giant predator with grasping claws) and Hallucigenia (a spiky, almost alien looking animal) - google them 😅

💡 in summer, alpine meadows around Yoho Valley and the Iceline trail explode with wildflowers

💡 some of the park’s top spots (like high elevation roads and trails) are closed from October to June due to heavy snowfall and avalanche risk

💡the park is part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks world heritage site (UNESCO)

Yoho quietly outdoes any kind of expectations, every single time I’m here. 🩵

No, you can’t bring your own paddleboard here 🛶🛑

@parks.canada has introduced stricter watercraft regulations across Alberta & BC, but what does that mean, what actually changed and why? 🧐

👉 Until now: visitors could bring their own watercraft if they followed the ‘clean, drain, dry’ protocol
(removing water, mud, and plants to prevent contamination between lakes).

☝️now:
🛶 lakes like Moraine & Bow Lake are classified as Water Preservation Zones, which means: no private kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, or inflatables AT ALL. Only on-site rental canoes are allowed.

🌊 lakes like Lake Louise, Hector Lake & a couple more are classified as Water Recreation zones. They still allow paddling, but under strict conditions. A self certification permit is required and following the ‘clean, drain, dry’ protocol is mandatory.

🚤 Lake Minnewanka remains the only lake where motorized boats are permitted (with inspection & tighter regulation). So far, it’s the only lake classified as Special Tactics Zone.

why all this? 🤓
to prevent aquatic invasive species, after some were detected in 2025. Zebra or quagga mussels, invasive plants, or diseases like the whirling disease can spread through microscopic traces of water on gear, if not properly cleaned. Once introduced, they are nearly impossible to remove, and especially the whirling disease can severely impact fish populations, particularly trout, whitefish and salmon. In some cases, it can kill up to 90 per cent of young fish. 🐟🩵

So YES, you can still paddle on those lakes, but please do your homework before you go & know the rules. 🫶🏼

because with more and more people visiting these places, protection like this becomes essential. And on a personal note: no one (except the wind) can destroy the incredible sunrise reflections at Moraine Lake anymore, hehe. ☺️

For some people, these are just rocks on a skyline, but for me, they hold stories, history, mystery, and awe. 💛

Did you know the “Three Sisters” exist in a few places around the world? 😊 I’ve been lucky enough to see versions of them in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, and each one is unique in its own way. But none of them stole my heart like this iconic landmark in the Canadian Rockies. 😍

Behind the view is a story that stretches far beyond what we see today. ✨ 👇
In the traditional language of the Stoney Nakoda, the name reflects their long standing cultural presence in the valley and is a reminder that these mountains have held meaning & stories loooong before English names existed.

Every mountain and every landscape has a story, and sometimes we just have to listen with our eyes and ears. 😊

What’s Gipfelschmaus in your language? ☺️

It’s April 12 and once again, it’s snowing here in Calgary. 🫠 the only thing I wanna do though, is sit on a peak, without wearing 347 layers and just chill with a snack in my hand.

What Gipfelschmaus actually means:
✨ Gipfel = summit / peak
✨ Schmaus = feast / delicious meal / treat

If you put them together and you’ve got Gipfelschmaus, a mountaintop feast! 😍

🤓 there’s a reason why food tastes better on a summit: after a hike, your body’s hungry, your brain’s full of dopamine, and even the air is a bit different. Lower oxygen levels and cool mountain air can subtly change your perception of taste and smell, making food seem more intense and satisfying. 🤤

Plus, psychologists call this ‘context-dependent enjoyment’, which basically means: food just feels more rewarding after a little sweat and when you’re soaking in those summit views. ☺️

Three sisters & a million facets. 🤍

The Three Sisters in Canmore are one of the most iconic and photographed landmarks in the Bow Valley. 🏔️ and every time I’m in Canmore, they look different, but always stunning and so majestic (even when they’re covered in clouds). 💛

They were originally named the ‘Three Nuns’ in 1883 after a snowstorm made them look like nuns in white veils, and in 1886 they were renamed the ‘Three Sisters’ by geologist George Dawson.

Over time, they became known as Faith, Charity, and Hope. These three sisters watching over the Bow Valley. While these names aren’t official on maps, they’re widely used in tourism and storytelling. ☺️

Don’t be a shrimp 🦐

…because our bodies were made to move, not to curl up like little desk shrimp for most of the day.

Long hours of sitting are actually linked to back pain, tight hips, and poor posture. If you have a desk job, you probably know what I’m talking about. 😵‍💫

If you can’t switch to sitting on rocks, this is what you can do when you’re tied to a desk:

1) get up every 30-60 min (even if it’s just to refill your water or stare out the window for a sec). A timer can help to build a habit in the beginning. ⏱️

2) un-shrimp yourself: shoulders back, chest open, feet flats your spine will thank you. Or just make a few stretches. 🦐 🛑

3) use your water breaks to stand up. This is two wins in one, because: hydration AND movement 😎💧

Outside, sitting on a random rock = better posture, fresh air, and a free mental reset. 🥰

It just takes a little longer for spring to arrive in the mountains. Until then, we’ll keep building snowmen, making snow angels, and enjoying all the fun winter things, just with a little more daylight ☺️☀️🏔️

Pro tip: always carry a little extra chocolate, so you can use it as eyes and nose for a snowman. But remember to eat the chocolate and take the wrappers before you leave 🫶🏼 #leavenotrace

What else does A in April stand for? ☺️

April in the Rockies is wild, because you can still frolick through winter wonderland, but you can also admire the deep blue of the streams an rivers in the mountains again. If we’re lucky we may be able to spot the first few flowers towards the end of the month. Plus, it’s shoulder season, which means: it’s nice and quiet out here, which gives nature & wildlife some space to wake up from hibernation 🥰

March ‘26 💛

What a wonderful month, which started with a cozy girls trip to Canmore with @kelly_menster, an empowering International Women’s Day hike with @outdoorsycrew (and lots of amazing women ✨), then, march took me on a little adventure to Ontario: first time in Toronto with Hanno (thanks for the wind and rain slap in our faces 🥲) my first NBA game (!!), and to the incredible Niagara Falls.

And to round up the month, Alberta gave us a couple more beautiful snow dumps to end the month. ❄️

While all this was wonderful and my heart is full, my head felt a bit chaotic, so I’m gonna try to do a daily mediation in April. ☺️

The last one is my favourite. 🥰

I missed world marmot day (2nd of February), but I can’t waaaiit for those tiny alpine engineers to come out of their burrows in a couple of weeks. ☺️

Marmots scared the hell out of me a couple of times already, because you can only spot them when they move, because they are so well hidden in their territory full of alpine rocks. 😅
But they are so chill, funny and majestic at the same time, and I love knowing they are out there. 🥰

Do you love marmots as much as I do? ☺️

P.S.: there is another marmot species in BC, which is the Vancouver Island marmot, and it‘s endemic to the island. 😊

Who needs a fridge like this? 🙋🏼‍♀️

It’s a baaad habit I’m working on, but when I eat inside, I’m usually doing 3 things at once. 😵‍💫

That’s why I love to eat outside, because I focus on my meal only (yea ok, I also stare at the views 😅). But in the end, every meal outside feels way more flavorful, satisfying and it’s way easier to notice when my body says it’s enough.

Soo, now I just need to learn how to do this inside too 👀
